Trust Your Instruments Not Your Feelings
A
sermon by Keith D. Wallace
2
Tim 3:15-17 And that from a child thou
hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation
through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of
God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness: That
the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
I. Introduction
1. Instrument Training
a.
spatial and vestibular disorientation come from conflicting signals between what
you see and what you feel -- your brain gets conflicting signals and doesn’t
know which is correct
b.
personally experienced this several times -- can get yourself into a mess or
even killed by relying on feelings instead of your instruments
B.
Modern Christianity is all about feelings -- toss away that old instrument and
just go by what you feel
1. Ministries geared towards making people feel good about:
- self -sin
-God -judgment
-Hell
2. relying on feelings is a dangerous thing to do
a. This is how cults get
started
i.
one cult goes around to people and explains their doctrine and tells people that
if they get a burning in their bosom that it’s God confirming what they were
just taught -- it’s a feeling and it cannot be backed up with scripture
b. God gave us His words so there would be no confusion
i.
1 Cor 14:33 For God is not the author
of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
c.
relying on feelings causes confusion and if God is not the author of confusion,
who is?
1. some feel that living a good life is the way to salvation
2. some feel that God is loving and wouldn’t send anyone to Hell
3. some feel that you must be “religious”
4.
some feel you must do things like good works or be baptized to be saved
B.
All the different feelings men have on this subject contradict each other and
are confusing to people
1.
remember that two things that are in disagreement cannot both be true, either
one is right and the other is not, or both are incorrect
2.
we must have a way of determining which feeling is correct, if any -- we have to
have some unchanging absolute to show us which of our ever changing feelings are
accurate, if indeed, any of them are
C.
Man should be very careful about following his feelings or following his heart
1.
Pr 14:12
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are
the ways of death.
2.
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above
all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
3.
the Bible even warns us about our feelings
4.
God understands that if left to man doctrines such as salvation would be
profaned, flawed and inconsistent with His plan -- so God laid down in writing
the final and absolute truth of salvation for man
5.
this truth is found in places such as 1
Cor 15:1-4, John 14:6, Acts 4:12 and Rom 10:9-13
6.
Man says be a good person, live a life that makes you feel good about yourself
-- but our instruments tell us that if you want to go to Heaven and if you want
your sins forgiven you better put your trust in Christ and forget your feelings
a.
if you believe what your feelings tell you instead of what your instruments tell
you then you’re heading for disaster
b.
quote 2
“the
majority of the illusions which lead to disorientation occur when visibility is
restricted”
1. Rom 3:23
2. Man does not naturally accept a complete and total pardon for sin
a.
it is natural for man to feel that because of his sin, after he is saved, that
God is angry at him and has forsaken him
3.
Many people feel that salvation is dependent upon them that they lose their
salvation every time they sin and must be saved again
4.
The problem lies within people getting saved and then relying on feelings
because they don’t have their eyes on their instruments
B.
Your instruments tell you:
1.
1 John 5:13 These things have I
written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know
that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of
God.
a.
“know” is a definite word you either know you’re saved or you don’t
b. There’s no “I think” I’m saved -- you either are or you
aren’t
c.
There’s no adding “…and do good works…” or “…and don’t sin
anymore…” to this verse
d.
You either have eternal life or you don’t
e.
Eternal life doesn’t end, it doesn’t pause, it doesn’t stop then start
again
f.
Once you’re saved you HAVE ETERNAL life
2.
John 1:12-13 But as many as received
him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe
on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of
the will of man, but of God.
1 John 3:2
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall
be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall
see him as he is. a. present tense “now are we the sons…”
b.
told in John 3:3 that “ye must be born again…” that’s born into the
family of God
c.
When you’re born into a family you can’t ever not be a part of that family
i. my dad died when I was 11…
d.
Ro 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth
witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
i.
before salvation the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness and coming
judgment but after salvation the Holy Spirit speaks peace to the soul that
confirms that the individual belongs to Christ
- Gal
4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into
your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
3.
John 10:28 And I give unto them
eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out
of my hand. My Father, which gave
them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my
Father's hand.
Rom 8:38-39
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height,
nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of
God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
a. is there anything more powerful that God?
b. is there any sin that God cannot cleanse?
Rom 5:20b
But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound
i.
we sing about this in the song Grace Greater Than All Our Sin
4.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto
you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath
everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death
unto life.
a. present tense again
b.
passed from death unto life -- before salvation we were under condemnation and
were guilty of our sins but after we get saved we are cleansed by the blood of
Jesus and are justified from all things (Acts
13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things)
i. justified = just if I had never sinned
c.
some would say well I just don’t feel that God would forgive what I’ve done.
But it doesn’t matter what you feel.
Get your eyes back on your instruments and forget about that feeling.
5.
Getting your eyes off your instruments or not trusting what your instruments are
telling you can cost you big in an airplane and it can cost you even bigger when
dealing with spiritual things
a.
quote 1 “ to alleviate symptoms of disorientation, you must rely on and
properly interpret the indications of your instruments”
1.
One of the most dangerous feelings men get is that the Bible, your instrument
itself, isn’t accurate
2.
Some feel that things like
a. creation
b. the fall of man into sin
c. miracles in both the OT and NT
d. virgin birth
e. Deity of Christ
f. existence of Heaven and Hell
g. salvation
h. judgment
that
these things are not really as they appear in the Bible
3.
Arguments are made attempting to deny or cast doubt on these doctrines
a. arguments such as:
i. evolution or theistic evolution
ii. trying to humanize miracles
- crossing red sea
- feeding the 5000
-- arguments used are ridiculous at best
iii.
God having a sexual relationship with Mary to create Jesus
iv.
Christ not being God but a God or a created God or a man who went on to become a
God
v.
Heaven and Hell are figurative
vi.
salvation is based upon man’s works
vii.
there is no judgment or that it is all just rewards and nothing to be afraid of
b. the only thing we have to know truth from fiction is the Bible
c. God gave us our Bible 2 Tim 3:16
d.
don’t take your eyes off your instruments because the only thing you have left
without sight is feeling and in this case you open yourself to man’s and the
devil’s attacks on your instrument itself
B.
quote 1 “ to alleviate symptoms of disorientation, you must rely on and
properly interpret the indications of your instruments”
C.
Learn to use your instruments
Trust your instruments
Forget about your feelings
D.
Feelings will change but this instrument is always the same and it is always
right! The Creator of this
instrument is always the same and is always right!
Trust this Book and trust the God who wrote it.
