BLESSED IS THE MAN

Lesson 7

Blessed is the Godly Man

TEXT:  Psalm 1:1-6

I. INTRODUCTION

A. Broken into two parts

1. Blessedness of the godly man

2. The end of the ungodly man

B. Sometimes we’re told what the we need to DO to be blessed; here we’re told what NOT to do to be blessed

II. WHAT THE BLESSED MAN AVOIDS – Vs. 1

A. He avoids walking in the counsel of the ungodly

1. Mankind has two basic means of counsel: other men or God

2. The blessed man knows that the counsel of other men usually means trouble

a. Forgiveness:

(1) World – forgive, but don’t forget; forgive conditionally

(2) God – forgive seventy times seven

b. Enemies:

(1) World – get even with your enemies

(2) God – Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you

c. Children:

(1) World – don’t spank your children; don’t be too hard on them

(2) God - He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

d. Daily Behavior:

(1) World – eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die

(2) God - Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee

3. The blessed man knows that God’s counsel is sound and the counsel of ungodly men will bring trouble

B. He avoids standing in the way of sinners

1. Does this mean we cannot befriend sinners?  No!

a. Jesus befriended and cared for sinners.  But He did not linger and allow them to rub off on Him.

2. Lot is an example of this

a. Lot went down into Sodom just to “look around a bit”

b. Pretty soon he got sucked in and had become tolerant of the activities there and even was a prominent figure in the city

c. He stood in the way of sinners and vexed his righteous soul

3. We cannot avoid interaction with sinners, but we can avoid adopting the ways of sinners.

a. We must not linger any longer than necessary or we will all eventually start the long road of compromise

C. He avoids sitting in the seat of the scornful

1. Scornful = one who derides, mocks, ridicules, or laughs at the things of God and scoffs at sin

2. There are Christian schools across this Nation that are there because of Christians not allowing their kids to sit in the seat of the scornful

a. School systems and teachers have mocked, ridicules and even laughed at the things of God

b. The blessed man knows to stay away from these

D. The progression of the actions

1. Walk, stand, sit

a. The blessed man who begins to embrace the ungodly will do so slowly

(1) Walk with them for a bit

(2) Stand with them, thinking in his mind that he’ll leave soon

(3) Finally he sits with them to remain indefinitely

b. Don’t even walk with them

c. Look at the potential cost; Lot lost his home and his wife and ended up committing sin with his daughters

III. WHAT THE BLESSED MAN LOVES – Vs. 2

A. He delights in God’s Word

1. “Delight” means just what you think it means.

a. It’s not, “Oh poor me, the Word of God says I have to do this and this.”

b. It is, “Bless God, His Word says thus and thus, and AMEN that’s right!”

2. The word of God is not there to make Christians miserable, it’s there to help them be able to enjoy fellowship with God

a. Whatever God’s word commands is not burdensome it is delightful and the results of it are blessings

B. He meditates upon God’s Word

1. This is not transcendental meditation

2. The blessed man spends time and thinks about what he has read in God’s word

3. He wants to get out of it what God has for him; he wants to hear from God

IV. HOW THE BLESSED MAN FARES – Vs. 3

A. He is a man of purpose

1. A tree planted in a specific place with a specific purpose; not just out in some random place in the wild

2. He plants himself near the river to be able to drink at all times

a. The parallel here is the Christian keeping his “water”—the Bible—nearby at all times

B. He is a man of production

1. He brings forth his fruit in his season

2. Fruit to a tree is its way of reproducing itself

3. The parallel to the Christian life is that our fruit is souls receiving Christ

C. He is a man of endurance

1. His leaf shall not wither

2. It is sad to see a tree that once was in full bloom and now is withered away and seemingly lifeless

D. He is a man of prosperity

1. The man that will devote his work to godly things will prosper in all that he does

2. Who or what else can make that guarantee?

V. CONCLUSION

A. The next three verses are quite the contrast to the first three

1. The ungodly are not like the blessed man

2. The ungodly man will not walk

a. He will be driven away like chaff

3. The ungodly man will not stand

a. He will fall on his face in shame at judgment

4. The ungodly man will not sit

a. He will not sit in the congregation of the righteous

B. The way of the blessed man is so much better than that of the ungodly

1. God knoweth the way of the righteous man

a. He has already walked that way and He knows it

b. We just have to trust Him and walk in the way in which He guides
