The Genesis Creation Account

I. Introduction to Genesis

            A. Written by Moses

            B. Covers time period of approx 4000 BC to 1700 BC

            C. Called the Book of Beginnings

                        1. Topics which have beginning in Genesis:

                                    a. Heaven and Earth

                                    b. Mankind

                                    c. Sin

                                    d. Salvation

                                    e. Races

                                    f. Judgment and Covenants

 II. Creation and Evolution

             A. Doctrine of creation is attacked by the world

1. In order to deny the existence of God one must first discredit His Creation

                        2. Atheists must believe in evolution – no other option

a. motive of atheistic evolutionist is to ease his conscience of sin and judgment

- If God created the world and everything in it, that means it all belongs to Him, and He probably has some rules and will judge those who break those rules.

            B. Two types of evolutionists

                        1. Scientific: claims authority of Darwin’s theory of evolution

Side note: Darwin’s Book was called “The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or The Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life”

2. Theistic Evolution: claims that God set things in motion and allowed evolution to finish the job

3. Biblical Evidence against these theories:

            a. Scientific: too much to list here.  Gen 1:1 is a good start though.

            b. Theistic: Gen 1:1-2:25,

                                    Gen 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31 also Gen 1:26

                                    John 1:3

                                    Col 1:16-17

            C. Days of Creation

                        1. Day 1 (verses 3-5)

                                    a. Light, day and night

                                                - God created the light before the sun

                                                - Ps 74:16, Rev 21:23

b. evening and morning were first day: follows Jewish tradition of a day being from sundown to sundown as opposed to rolling over at midnight

                       2. Day 2 (verses 6-8)

                                    a. firmament

                                                - firmament called Heaven

                                                - verses 9, 14, 20

                         3. Day 3 (verses 9-12)

                                    a. dry land, seas, vegetation

- if the day/age theory is correct, the plants grew for thousands or millions of years before the sun was created

                        4. Day 4 (verses 14-19)

                                    a. sun, moon, stars

- end of verse 16 “he made the stars also” seems to be an after thought that says God made the sun and the moon!!  Oh and He also made the stars (yawn).  Like it’s some big deal for God to make a few billion stars. Wow!

                        5. Day 5 (verses 20-23)

                                    a. fish and fowl

                                                - after his kind – no evolving from rocks

                         6. Day 6 (verses 24-27)

                                    a. living creatures (cattle, beasts of the field)

                                                - after their kind again

                                    b. man

- verse 26 God says “Let us make man in our image”  That’s the plurality of the God-head right in the first chapter of the Bible

            - Got evidence for the Father, Son and Holy Ghost

-  Man was created in the likeness of God.

-Man is a trichotomy (a 3-part being) just like God.

- Gen 2:7 body, spirit and soul (1 Thess 5:23)

- God created man upright (Eccl 7:29), intelligent with the faculty of speech

                                                - God gave man dominion – set man up as the ruler of the earth

c. God then sets up the first diet (for man and animal), which was vegetarian

                                                - this changes after the flood though (Gen 9:1-3)

                        7. Day 7 (Gen 2:1-3)

a. God is finished with all the Creation – nothing further is to be created because “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made” John 1:3

b. Adaptation and natural selection are part of God’s design and they do happen.  Animals and humans are able to adapt to their surroundings which was part of God’s design.  They do not prove evolution.

c. Day 7 is not the Sabbath.  Sabbath observance was not instituted until Ex 16:23-30.

            - Sabbath further explained in Ex 20:8-11, Ex 31:12-17
